Firefighters Recognized in Atlanta

FIREFIGHTERS RECOGNIZED IN ATLANTA

Our local Fire Chief attends Annual Events in Atlanta

CAMILLA, GEORGIA, FEBRUARY 2 — Camilla’s Fire Chief Jamie Sullivan attended the 50th annual Firefighter Recognition Day in Atlanta on Tuesday followed by the Georgia Firefighters Legislative Appreciation Dinner at the State Capitol.

In addition, Chief Sullivan had the opportunity to meet with our State Representative Joe Campbell and Representative Micah Gravley of Douglasville. Representative Gravley was the keynote speaker that evening at the dinner. He also sponsored the bill to protect Georgia’s Firefighters with cancer insurance.

Firefighters risk their lives each time they enter a burning building, and research shows there are long term risks involved such as cancer and heart disease. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently discovered that firefighters face a 9 percent increase in cancer diagnoses, and a 14 percent increase in cancer-related deaths, compared to the general population in the U.S.

Chief Sullivan has been fighting fires for forty years and was appointed Fire Chief for the City of Camilla in 2013.
